Nizhny Novgorod Governorate
The Nizhny Novgorod Governorate ( Russian: Нижегородская губерния / Nischegorodskaja gubernija) was an administrative unit of the Russian Empire and the Russian SFSR , located in the east of European Russia. It existed from 1796 to 1929 and the capital was Nizhny Novgorod . The government bordered on the north by the Kostroma , northeast to the Vyatka Governorate , on the east by the Kazan province , in the southeast of the province of Simbirsk , on the south by the Penza province , in the southwest on the Tambov Governorate and the west by the province Vladimir .
history
The governorate was formed in 1796 from the governorship of Nizhny Novgorod . The Nizhny Novgorod Governorate existed until 1929 as part of the Russian SFSR of the Soviet Union . After the dissolution, a new administrative unit, the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast (shortly after Nizhny Novgorod Krai ), was formed.
scope
The first Russian census in 1897 counted 1,584,774 inhabitants (31 / km²) on 45,036.7 square meters (= 51,252 km²). The population consisted of 93% Russians, 3% each of Mordvins and Tatars, then Cheremiss, etc. 9% lived in cities. The capital Nizhny Novgorod had 90,053 inhabitants.
In 1926 the governorate covered 81,458 km² with 2,743,344 inhabitants (33 / km²).
