Semjonow ( Russian Семёнов ) is a city in the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast ( Russia ) with 24,473 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located in the Volga Vetluga lowland about 70 km northeast of Oblasthauptstadt Nizhny Novgorod on the Sanochta , a right tributary of the Volga opens Kerzhenets River .
Semjonow is the administrative center of the Rajons of the same name .
history
The place in the first half of the 17th century as a settlement for Old Believers . It was first mentioned in 1644 as Semjonowskoje , in 1717 as the parish village of Semjonowo .
In 1779 the place received city rights as the administrative center of a district ( Ujesds ) under the name Semjonow .
Until the October Revolution , the city remained one of the most important centers of Old Orthodoxy.
Since the 17th century, in the area around the northwestern village of Khokhloma, the well-known handicraft of Khochloma painting ( Khochlomskaja rospis ) with gold and red plant and animal motifs on a black background on wooden utensils such as spoons, bowls or jugs was widespread . In 1918, after the October Revolution, the production of these products was centralized in Semyonov at the instigation of the Soviet authorities. In 1925 the production was placed under an Artel and more and more towards mass production, which culminated in the opening of a factory in 1960.

Culture and sights
Various buildings from the 18th to 19th centuries have been preserved in the city, such as the Church of All Saints ( церковь Всех Святых / zerkow Wsech Svjatych) and the Old Orthodox St. Nicholas Church ( Никольская церковь / Nikolskaja zerkow).
Semjonow has had a museum of folk art products since 1934, today under the name Semjonow Historical and Art Museum .
To the east of Semjonow lies the Svetlojar lake , on the bottom of which the mythical town of Kitesh is said to have sunk.
Economy and Infrastructure
The Khokhloma folk art products still play a central role in the economy of the city of Semyonov. There are also companies involved in equipment manufacturing and the wood processing industry.
The city lies on the railway line Moscow –Nizhny Novgorod– Kirov (route km 511) opened on this section in 1927 , on which today a large part of the trains of the Trans-Siberian Railway runs on its western part from Moscow. The R159 Nizhny Novgorod – Jaransk road also runs through Semyonov .
