The Kerzhenets River ( Russian Керженец ) is a 290 km long left tributary of the Volga River in the European part of Russia .

course

The Kerzhenets rises in the northwest of the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast , not far from the border with Kostroma Oblast . From there it flows mainly in a southerly direction through the densely forested, sparsely populated landscape. About 20 km northwest of Lyskowo , the river finally flows into the Volga, which is dammed up to form the Cheboksarsk reservoir .

Kerschenez is frozen on average from November to April. The ice drift in spring lasts about two days, the subsequent spring flood , which provides around 63% of the annual runoff, lasts until May.

history

The sparsely populated catchment area of Kerschenez served as a retreat for the so-called Old Believers after the schism within the Russian Orthodox Church . Until the 19th century, numerous of their Kerschenskije Skity ( Russian Керженские скиты ) called settlements existed.

tourism

In addition to the settlements of the Old Believers, the Makarios Scholtowodski Trinity Monastery not far from the mouth of the river is a popular destination for tourists. Because of its remoteness and the charming location in a wooded valley, the river is also very popular with boaters .
