Knjaginino ( Russian Княгинино ) is a small town in the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast ( Russia ) with 6,708 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located about 110 km southeast of the oblast capital Nizhny Novgorod on the Imsa , a left tributary of the Urga in the river system of the Volga .
Knjaginino is the administrative center of the raion of the same name .
history
The place was first mentioned in the middle of the 16th century when Tsar Ivan the Terrible assigned the surrounding lands to the boyars (or princes) Mikhail Worotynski . The place name means the possession of the place by a princess (Russian knjaginja ).
On December 28, 1779, the place received city rights as the administrative center of a district ( Ujesds ) under the name Knjaginin , but lost the administrative function again in 1796.
Between 1917 and 1926 (exact time unknown) the place lost its town charter due to the small population and now belonged to the Bolshoye Murashkino district as the village of Knjaginino .
In November 1944, Knjaginino was again the administrative center of an independent Rajon, received on January 8, 1968 again the status of an urban-type settlement and on March 17, 1998 renewed town charter.

Culture and sights
The city has a local museum.
25 kilometers south-east in the village of Wosroschdenije of Knjaginino district lies the former country residence of the Tolmachin family with a park ensemble from the 19th century, 20 kilometers south in the village of Oserki the manor of the Insarski family.
Economy and Infrastructure
Knjaginino is the center of the textile industry with a long tradition of producing headgear (hats, fur hats and, in particular, uniform hats for the armed forces , militia and railways ). There are also companies in the food industry ( milk powder factory ) and the construction industry.
The nearest train station is Smagino , 50 kilometers south on the Moscow - Arsamas - Kazan route .
