Kulebaki ( Russian Кулебаки ) is a town in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast ( Russia ) with 35,759 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
Geography and traffic
The city is located in the Meshchora lowlands about 190 km southwest of the Oblast capital Nizhny Novgorod not far from the confluence of the Oka and Tjoscha rivers . Kulebaki is the administrative center of the Rajons of the same name .
The city is located is the terminus of a 28-kilometer railway line , which in navashino of the route Moscow - Arzamas - Kazan branches. This route is used exclusively for freight traffic. The R72 road (Vladimir – Murom –Arsamas) also runs through Kulebaki .
history
The village of Kulebaki was first mentioned in 1719 and in 1781 it became a church village. The place is named after the Kulebakin family, who have been documented in the area since the 15th century.
In 1866 the Kulebakier metallurgical plant was established based on local iron ore deposits . In 1877, the first Siemens-Martin furnace was one of the first in Russia to go into operation. In 1900 the plant ranked second to the Sormovo plant in Nizhny Novgorod in terms of its production volume (strip and rolled steel, railroad tracks, steel and cast iron products).
In 1932, Kulebaki was granted city rights. In Kulebaki there was the POW camp 320 for German prisoners of war of the Second World War .

Culture and sights
In the city center, part of the wooden buildings from the 19th century have been preserved, mostly residential buildings, but also the representative former People's House , which was originally built as a pavilion for the All-Russian Industrial and Crafts Exhibition in Nizhny Novgorod in 1896 and was moved to Kulebaki after its end.
At the metallurgical plant there is a museum about its history and the history of iron and metal smelting in the region.

In addition to the metallurgical plant, today Ruspolimet AG , there are companies in the textile, food and construction industries.
Sawasleika Air Force Base is a good ten kilometers west of the city .
