The Meshchora ( Russian Мещёра or Мещёрская низменность - Meshchora Plain, German also Meshchera) is a plain in the oblasts of Moscow , Vladimir and Ryazan in Russia .

The area is bounded on all sides by rivers: in the north by the Kljasma , in the southwest by the Moskva , in the south by the Oka and in the east by Sudogda and Kolp . It is a sand plain , which was formed mainly in the last Ice Age and inclines slightly in a north-south direction . In the northern part, the height above sea level is 120-130 m, in the south 80-100 m.

The Meschtschora is traversed by the rivers Buscha , Zna , Polja , Gus , Pra , whose valleys are swampy. There are many lakes and swamps or peat bogs . About half of the area is covered by mixed forests.

The Meschtschora (Vladimir Oblast) and Meshchorsky (Ryazan Oblast) national parks occupy part of the Meshchora . The western foothills of the Meshchora lowlands extend into the urban area of Moscow ; here they form part of the Lossiny Ostrow National Park .
