Bogorodsk ( Russian Богоро́дск ) is a city in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast in Russia . It has 35,499 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) and is the administrative center of the Rajons of the same name . Bogorodsk is located about 43 km southwest of Nizhny Novgorod .
history
Bogorodsk has existed since 1570. The town owes its creation to around 300 settlers from Nizhny Novgorod who were disgraced by Ivan the Terrible and exiled there. At first the village was called Bogorodizkoje or Bogoroditschnoje , derived from Bogorodiza (= Mother of God ). Leather processing developed in the village later, and further handicrafts were added from the 17th century. Bogorodsk only received city status in 1923.

Economy and Infrastructure
The leather craft has survived in Bogorodsk to this day; In total there are four factories for leather processing in the city, as well as shoe, textile and building material factories.
The city has a train station on the railway line from Murom to Nizhny Novgorod.
