List of cities in Russia |
Balachna ( Russian Балахна́ ) is a Russian city with 51,519 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) on the right bank of the Volga in the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast .
history
Balachna was founded in 1474 under the name Sol-na-Gorodze ( Соль-на-Городце , roughly "Salt near Gorodets " ). After the destruction by the Khan of Kazan in 1536, a wooden fortress was built under the current place name to protect against the Tatar raids. The city was an important location for the salt industry in the 16th century and shipbuilding in the 18th and 19th centuries. From April 1932 to February 1934 there was a corrective labor camp of the Soviet Gulag system in Balachna .
Today there is mainly a paper and furniture industry as well as a peat- powered power station.
The most important person in the city is Kuzma Minin , who emerged as a hero from the war against Poland-Lithuania in the 17th century.
In 1993 the neighboring urban-type Pravdinsk settlement was incorporated, which roughly doubled the population. The settlement was built in 1932 on the site of the former villages of Kursa and Wonjata near a paper mill.
