history
In a document from 1565, the village of Meschtschorskaja Porosl was mentioned in connection with (earlier) donations of the lands by Ivan the Terrible to the boyar Alexander Gorbaty-Shuiski. Later the place was called Meschtschorskaja Sloboda and in 1672 it was renamed Gorbatowo after the nickname of the previous owner .
In 1779, under the name of Gorbatow, town charter was granted as the administrative center of a district ( Ujesds ).
Up until the end of the 19th century, the manufacture of hemp ropes in several smaller rope factories was the city's most important economic sector. However, the city lost its economic and political importance compared to the more conveniently located places Worsma and especially Pavlovo, where the district administration was relocated in 1918.
