Schachunja ( Russian Шахунья ) is a city in the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast ( Russia ) with 20,921 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

The city is located about 240 km northeast of the Oblast capital Nizhny Novgorod , east of the river Wetluga .

Shachunja is the administrative center of the raion of the same name .

history

In 1921, in connection with the construction of the Nizhny Novgorod– Kotelnitsch railway line, a settlement was built about three kilometers from the old village of the same name at the future Shachunya railway station . The name was probably derived from the family name of the first settler Schachunski.

The train station, which opened in 1927, received a larger locomotive depot, and an electricity station was built in the 1930s.

In 1938 the place received the status of an urban-type settlement and in 1943 the town charter .

Economy and Infrastructure

In Shachunja there are companies in the wood processing, food and textile industries.

The city is located on the railway line Moscow –Nizhny Novgorod– Kirov (route km 682), opened on this section in 1927 , on which a large part of the trains of the Trans-Siberian Railway runs on its western part from Moscow. The R159 Nizhny Novgorod – Jaransk road also runs through Shakhunya .
