Life and work

Greil works as an independent environmental technician. His sister Melanie Greil was also a successful table tennis player.

Career

Greil, who comes from the youth of TSG Burg Gretesch , was the first winner of the DTTB youth competition mini championships in 1983 . In 1988 he took part in the European Youth Championship. From 1988 to 1989 he played for Spvg. Niedermark in the second division, then for one season for Borussia Düsseldorf . Then he was active for the TTC drawbridge Grenzau in the table tennis Bundesliga . With the Westerwäldern he was able to become German team champion in 1991 and 1994. In 1994 he was also German runner-up in men's doubles with Oliver Alke . In the same year he was in the national team in the 0: 4 defeat in the European league game against Sweden.

He later played for Team Galaxis Lübeck (1996–1997) and Werder Bremen (from 1997) before moving to Hamburger SV in 2004 . When he dissolved his second division team for financial reasons in 2007, Greil moved together with Oliver Alke to the table tennis friends Bergedorf, Vier- and Marschlande in the Oberliga Nord . With the Bergedorfern he rose to the regional league in the first season. Since 2010 he has been playing with SC Poppenbüttel in the Regionalliga Nord.

After Greil was only able to succeed on a regional level for years, he made a surprising comeback on a national level at the German Championships in 2008 in the Hamburg sports hall . Only when Bastian Steger dropped out due to injury did he slip into the field of participants in the championships, he reached the semi-finals in the men's doubles alongside 15-year-old Patrick Franziska . There, however, the eventual winners Patrick Baum and Dimitrij Ovtcharov were a size too big. For Greil, the third place meant the first medal at German championships after 14 years.
