Patrick Franziska (* 11. June 1992 in Bensheim ) is a German table tennis national player . In 2016 he became European champion in doubles, in 2019 he won bronze and gold in the mixed World Cup at the European Games .

Career

Patrick Franziska started his career at TSV 1875 Höchst . He then moved to SV Mörlenbach and then played at TTC 1947 Elz. The right-hander was the 2007 European schoolchildren champion with the team and came second in the 2009 world championship with the junior team. In 2010 he was European Junior Champion in singles. He is also a multiple German junior champion.

In 2008, Franziska took part in the German Adult Championship for the first time in Hamburg . He was originally only intended for the individual competition, in which he was eliminated in the preliminary round. Due to the rejection of other players, he was able to start in the men's doubles with Kay-Andrew Greil from Hamburg . In the quarter-finals they managed to beat number three, Nico Christ and Lennart Wehking, after defending two match points, a close 4: 3 success and thus made it into the semi-finals, in which the later champions Patrick Baum and Dimitrij Ovtcharov were a size too big . This made Patrick Franziska the youngest medalist at these championships.

At the European Championship 2010 Franziska moved to Bastian Steger as a substitute in the national team. With the team he won the European title and was in the second round in doubles with Patrick Baum. At the World Youth Championship in Bratislava in December 2010, he won bronze with the team and with Arne Hölter in doubles.

From 2009/10 to 2011/12 he played for the TG Hanau in the 1st  Bundesliga . In 2011 he was awarded the title Young Player of the Year 2010 . In 2012 it was placed among the top 100 in the world rankings for the first time, and has been there permanently since October 2012.

For the 2012/13 season, Franziska moved to league competitor TTC RhönSprudel Fulda-Maberzell after his old club withdrew . Together with Timo Boll , he won the German Open 2013 in doubles. In October 2013 he was again European champion with the team . He won all of his four games. In the individual, he was eliminated in the second round. In 2014 he was runner-up with the German team in Tokyo . He only lost the game against world number one Xu Xin in the final . For the 2014/15 season he moved to the record champions Borussia Düsseldorf , with whom he immediately became champions and cup winners. At the German Open 2015 he won the double competition with Timo Boll again.

At the 2015 World Cup , among other things, he made it to the quarter-finals by defeating the top 10 player Marcos Freitas , where he was defeated by the later runner-up, Fang Bo , and thus reached a new record position in the world rankings with 28th place. At the European Championship he won silver with the team. However, due to declining individual performance since the World Cup, he gradually fell back in the world rankings and was therefore only nominated as a substitute for the 2016 Olympic Games . With Borussia Düsseldorf he was again German champion and cup winner. He moved to 1. FC Saarbrücken for the 2016/17 Bundesliga season , and the contract has now been extended to 2021. From May 2016, Franziska formed a double with the Dane Jonathan Groth, who also plays in the Bundesliga . They won the gold medal at the European Championships in October. In addition, they won the Croatia and the Austrian Open on the World Tour and reached the semifinals of the Czech and Swedish Open, whereby they qualified for the Grand Finals with the minimum number of four tournaments. However, due to an injury to Francis, they were unable to participate. At the Korea Open 2017, in addition to silver in doubles, he won his first individual medal on the World Tour after losing to Timo Boll in the final. At the 2017 European Championships , he again won gold with the team. Also in 2017 he qualified in doubles with Jonathan Groth for the Grand Finals , but they were eliminated in the first round. At the team World Cup , in which he, Boll and Ovtcharov were only available to a limited extent due to injury problems, he won silver again with the German team.

Franziska won three bronze medals at the 2018 European Championship : in singles, where he lost just 3: 4 to Timo Boll in the semifinals, in doubles, where he was defending champion with Jonathan Groth at his side with the same result to eventual winners Daniel Habesohn / Robert Gardos from Austria failed, and with partner Petrissa Solja in mixed. In November 2018 he reached his best world ranking position to date with 13th place. He also qualified again for the Grand Finals , both in doubles - he and Jonathan Groth did not compete for financial reasons - and in singles, where he was eliminated in the first round against the eventual winner Tomokazu Harimoto . At the 2019 World Cup , he won bronze in a mixed with Petrissa Solja, but his doubles partner Timo Boll fell ill after reaching the quarter-finals, so that the chance for another medal could not be used. A month later they won the double competition of the China Open by beating the world champion duo Ma Long / Wang Chuqin in the final. With Saarbrücken Franziska was also able to beat defending champion Borussia Düsseldorf in the Bundesliga play-offs and thus reach the final, which was lost to Ochsenhausen. At the European Games , he won gold with Solja in mixed and with the team with which he also won the European Championship in September . In July he beat world number three fan Zhendong and runner-up world champion Mattias Falck at the Australian Open, among others, and made it to the semi-finals, in which he lost 3: 4 to world number one and later winner Xu Xin after winning match point .

In the 2019/20 season he was German champion with 1. FC Saarbrücken table tennis .
