Proton Persona

The Proton Wira (also Proton 400 / Wira Persona / Natura ) was built from 1993 to 2009 by the Malaysian automobile manufacturer Proton as a four-door notchback and five-door hatchback. The Wira was intended as a new alternative to the Proton Saga Iswara , a revised version of Proton's first Saga model, as the top model in the compact class. The saga was regularly revised slightly until 2008. Then a second generation was brought out, this time as a small car.

The Wira was later to be replaced by two models designed by Proton itself. The GEN • 2 , which was introduced in 2004, replaced the hatchback Aeroback . The Persona appeared in 2007 as the successor to the sedan. Until 2009, the Wira was produced as a sedan - mainly for the export markets - but still in parallel.

“Wira” means “hero” in Bahasa Malaysia as a loan word from Sanskrit . The Proton Putra coupe, which was marketed in Europe as the Proton Coupé or Proton 418, was also derived from the Wira .

history

Rear view

The Wira was introduced in 1993 as a four-door notchback and was based on the Mitsubishi Lancer from 1992, but had a slightly different design. The headlights came from the Mitsubishi Colt from 1992, the rear lights from the Mitsubishi Galant station wagon from 1987, the bumpers from the Mitsubishi Mirage and the dashboard was also modified. The front view continued the line of the Iswara saga. In 1994 a five-door hatchback was added (initially under the name Wira Aeroback ).

Proton originally designed a small, five-door station wagon based on the sedan with the same rear lights as the first revised Wira in the mid-1990s . This development came to light when a local newspaper depicted a scrapped prototype behind the Proton assembly plant in Shah Alam. Since there was little information about this model afterwards, it is believed that it never got beyond the conceptual stage.

In 1995 the Wira was revised and got a new radiator grille and slimmer taillights. White flashing lights followed at the beginning of 1999. In mid-2004 there were other small changes to the grille and the bumpers. Despite these minor upgrades, the Wira's design remained basically the same for over ten years.

In 2004 Proton introduced the Wira Special Edition (also Wira SE). About 100,000 of them were supposed to be made, but they missed that sales target. The SE models were released as aeroback versions at various points in the Wira model cycle and had sporty accessories such as body packages, redesigned interiors and, if desired, aluminum spoilers.

Many Proton models that were introduced after the Wira had a front design that was derived from that of the Wira. These include the first-generation Satria / 300 hatchback , the two-door Putra coupe and the Pickup Arena .

As a successor to the Wira, Proton constructed the GEN • 2 , a station wagon that was codenamed "Wira Replacement Model", and launched it in 2004. In August 2007 the Persona appeared , a new sedan based on the GEN • 2 to replace the Wira sedan.

In the first series, the 1.3 l 12V four-cylinder in-line engine was available in the basic version of the Wira / 400. The 1.5 liter 12V four-cylinder in-line engine from the Saga Iswara and the Saga was taken over unchanged. The 1.6 l 16V four-cylinder in-line engine was introduced together with the 4-speed automatic transmission (on request) (and electric windows on all 4 doors). The Wira was the first Proton model to be equipped with it. The models with multi-point injection were called MPi.

In 1995 the Wira received the revised Mitsubishi Orion engine with 1.3 l displacement, which was already used in the Saga. Then came the 1.8 l 16V four-cylinder DOHC in-line engine in 1996, used for the first time in a Proton. At the same time, the 2.0 l diesel four-cylinder engine (model 2.0D or SDi) appeared, but was later dropped due to a lack of customer interest. To this day, the Wira is Proton's only diesel model. In 1999 all carburetor versions of the Wira for Malaysia disappeared .

Safety equipment

Like most of the other Proton models of that time, the Wira for Malaysia did not have any other safety equipment to offer than three-point seat belts with belt tensioners and a windshield made of safety glass. The export models, however, had significantly better safety features, e.g. B. an airbag for the driver, side impact protection in the doors and ABS , which was later also available in Malaysia.

export

In 1994 export to the United Kingdom began under the name '' Persona '' (not to be confused with the latest limousine model, Persona ). As with the Saga, all export models received multi-point injection (MPI) so that they complied with the Euro I emissions standard .

In the rest of Europe, the Wira was sold as the Proton 400 from 1995 to 2001.

For the UK there was also a turbodiesel called the TDi. Since 2001 the car has been offered under the name Wira in the United Kingdom. In 2002 the Wira was replaced by the Proton Impian , which is manufactured in Malaysia under the name Waja .

In 2005, Zagross Khodro began building the Wira as a CKD kit for the Iranian market.
