The Proton Savvy is a small car that was built by the Malay car manufacturer Proton mainly for the Asian market from 2005 to 2011 as the successor to the Tiara . It was not until 2014 that Proton presented a successor model, the Proton Iriz .

history

After Proton decided in 2000 to discontinue the Tiara based on the Citroën AX , a replacement was needed for Proton's re-entry into the small car market. This replacement was originally called the Tiara Replacement Model (TRM), was partly designed by Proton itself and was powered by a Renault -D engine.

The Savvy was introduced in Malaysia in June 2005 . Initially there was only one model with a manual gearbox, but in November 2005 a model with a semi-automatic gearbox was submitted. The car was offered in Great Britain from September 2005. The Savvy was also one of the two Proton models (except the Gen-2 ) that MG Rover wanted to recreate under its own name when it began talks with Proton's parent company in 2005. On January 19, 2007, a retouched model with small changes to the front and rear was presented.

In 2006 Proton introduced the Savvy Zerokit variant in conjunction with Proton's motorsport department R3 (Race, Rally, Research), which introduced a body package, a rear spoiler made of GRP and JRD wheels 6 ″ × 15 ″. In addition, there were Dark Titanum headlights, a sports suspension and a special exhaust system that increased the output by 3 bhp (2.2 kW) to 78 bhp (57 kW).

The Savvy is also the first Proton model for which a recall start had. On April 1, 2008, Proton recalled all 34,000 Savvy in Malaysia to workshops that were manufactured prior to December 17, 2007. The rear wheel bearings had to be examined and, if necessary, replaced as they were identified as faulty in a random sample. It was announced that water ingress was possible, which could lead to failure of some parts.

The second generation of the Saga , released in January 2008, is based on the Savvy's platform, but extended for the small sedan.

construction

Unlike the tiara, the Savvy was largely designed by Proton itself. It was powered by a 1.2 liter four-cylinder SOHC in-line engine with 16 valves from Renault, as was also used in the Renault models Twingo and Clio .

In contrast to most French cars, reverse gear is at the top left in the shift diagram. It is locked with a ring on the gear knob, which must be pulled up when engaging the gear so that you cannot accidentally engage reverse gear instead of first gear.

The Savvy and other models designed by Proton itself, such as the Gen-2 , the Persona , the Satria Neo , the Waja , the Waja Chancellor and the second generation of the Saga have the turn signal lever on the left and not, like the previous models, like the first Generation of the Saga , the Wira and the Perdana , right.

The first generation features a V-shaped logo on the front and back, while the second generation has a straight grille and two horizontal lines at the back.

Only for the Malay market was there a basic model called Savvy Lite , which lacked equipment details such as remote control for the door locks, electric windows and anti-theft alarm system.

Since 2010 the production of the '' Savvy '' has been stopped, which had led to dissatisfaction among the Malay fans.

In 2014 a new small car followed, the Proton Iriz .
