The New Straits Times (NST) is an English-language daily newspaper published in Malaysia . It originated in 1965 from the Malaysia edition of the Singapore- based newspaper The Straits Times . Based on the founding date of the Straits Times in 1845 , the New Straits Times describes itself as the oldest (still in print) newspaper in Malaysia. With a circulation of 140,000 copies, it was one of the smaller of the 10 most important Malaysian daily newspapers at the beginning of 2014. It is in competition with the English-language daily newspapers The Star and The Sun , both of which had about twice the circulation in 2014.

The New Straits Times is published by the New Straits Times Press , a subsidiary of the publicly traded Malaysian media group Media Prima . The publishing program also includes other newspapers in the Malaysian language , in particular the important daily Berita Harian .

history

In 1845 the American Catchick Moses and the English Robert Carr Woods founded the Straits Times newspaper in Singapore . It initially appeared weekly with a business newspaper as the Straits Times and Singapore Journal of Commerce , and from 1858 as the Daily Mail as a daily newspaper. As The Straits Times it became the most important English-language newspaper of the British colony British Malaya , which included the Malay Peninsula and the island of Singapore.

In 1956 a local edition was introduced for the Malaysian region. With the independence of Singapore in 1965, this resulted in the independent daily newspaper Straits Times Malaysia , while the Straits Times continued to appear in Singapore. Four years later, the sale of Singaporean newspapers in Malaysia and vice versa was banned due to political sensitivities. Since then, both newspapers have only appeared in their respective home countries.

When Malaysia decided in 1972 to limit foreigners' stakes in Malaysian newspapers to 20 percent, the previous owner The Straits Times Press brought the Straits Times Malaysia into the newly founded company The New Straits Times Press (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. and sold 80 percent of their shares. The newspaper was renamed the New Straits Times .

In the 2000s, the New Straits Times came under pressure from the star , founded in 1971 , who overtook it in terms of circulation. Following the example of the Star and other newspapers, the NST then gave up its 160-year tradition as a broadsheet newspaper and switched to the tabloid format in 2004/2005 . This step helped to increase the circulation by 10 percent.

In 2011 the design and content of the newspaper were revised. The first issue of the new format appeared on November 11, 2011. The New Straits Times was the first newspaper to be available in a "3D edition", in which images could be viewed with 3D glasses . From February 21, 2012, the newspaper experimented with another new technology: It became the first "speaking newspaper" to reproduce recorded commercials.

Political controversies and closeness to the government

In 2012, the Australian Senator Nick Xenophon , independent member of the Australian Parliament , was present as an observer at a demonstration critical of the government in Islamic Malaysia. The New Straits Times then reported on an alleged anti-Islamic testimony by Xenophon and his liberal attitudes towards LGBT issues, along with critical comments from an opposition politician on these statements. In fact, Xenophon had criticized Scientology , and the NST had replaced “Scientology” with “Islam” in its quote. The affair caused a stir in the Australian and Malaysian media and contributed to the public perception of the New Straits Times as a medium close to the ruling coalition Barisan Nasional .

The German Foreign Office also classifies the New Straits Times as “close to the government”.
