Models

Perdana SEi (1995-1998)

The Perdana was introduced by Proton in 1995 and had the tried and tested 2.0 l SOHC four-cylinder in-line engine 4G63 from Mitsubishi . The car was based on the Mitsubishi Galant platform , so it was the same as the Mitisubishi Eterna model in Japan , but received minor changes inside and out when it came out in Malaysia . It was powered by a four-cylinder in-line engine with a displacement of 2.0 liters, which delivered 135 hp (99 kW). The 1st generation of the Perdana was the first Proton model to offer ABS and cruise control .

In 1997 the Perdana received a facelift and got a new, chrome-plated grille, rims in a new design, new exterior colors and an improved interior.

Perdana V6 (since 1999)

In 1999 Proton installed the 2.0 l V6 6A12 from Mitsubishi in the Perdana, which developed 148 hp (109 kW). The Proton Perdana V6 also had a new body package and 16 "rims. The four-cylinder Perdana was built in parallel for a short time, but then discontinued. With its chassis, which was improved by Lotus Cars , the car is very stable in curves and very safe even at high speeds.

In 2003, the Perdana V6 received a major facelift, a new Alfa Romeo- style grille (nicknamed Alfadana in Malaysia ) and new bumpers. The new interior had aluminum effects. This version is still offered today. In addition, there is a luxury version of the Perdana V6, which is extended by 25 cm in the area of the rear doors and is called the Proton Perdana V6 Executive . The Perdana V6 Executive is essentially a conversion of the normal Perdana V6 by Automotive Conversion Engineering (ACE), a subsidiary of EON that specializes in designing Pullman sedans for politicians and building the TD2000 . There are two Perdana V6 Pullman sedans from ACE, which have been lengthened by 66 cm and 91 cm respectively and offer a lot more luxury than the executive variant.

Like the first Perdana, the Perdana V6 is not exported to Europe, although it was tested in the UK by Top Gear auto magazine in April 1999 because of initial plans to sell the V6 to Europe. The latter were never realized.

Planned successor

When a collaboration between Proton and Volkswagen was discussed in 2004 , it was expected that the successor to the Perdana would be built on the platform of the Volkswagen Passat . However, when Volkswagen announced that it had dropped negotiations on a cooperation, this plan was also put aside.

In 2005 there were also negotiations between Proton and Mitsubishi Australia to replace the Perdana with a takeover of the Mitsubishi 380 . But this possibility was rejected again.

When the Exora came out in 2009 , its platform could be used as a possible basis for a new Perdana.

Use by the Malay government

According to the guidelines of Malaysia's automobile policy, official government vehicles must be domestically produced. Since Proton is the only fully Malay automaker that makes sufficiently large cars, the Perdana and Waja are preferred as vehicles for senior government officials, including the Prime Minister , with the exception of Sarawak .

Dispute over maintenance costs

The quality standard and maintenance costs of the Perdana V6 Executive were changed in 2008 after a dispute over the procurement of 14 Mercedes-Benz E 200 superchargers by the provincial government of Terengganu - which is provided by the Barisan Nasional party - to remove the existing Proton Perdana V6 from the 2004 as official government vehicles should replace. The State Secretary of Terengganu, Mokhtar Nong , argued that the decision was made because the Perdanas were not sufficiently reliable and often required expensive repairs, especially on the gearbox, when used for longer trips. Since 2004, two Perdanas from the government fleet had caused total repair costs of RM 175,229.97 and RM 132,357.76 respectively.

Proton denied the allegation of high maintenance costs by the provincial government of Terengganu and stated that the regular maintenance costs (engine oil and oil filter change) for the Perdana would only be around RM 200.00. The dispute has sparked suspicion of a maintenance fraud in the provincial government of Terengganu, since the usual total maintenance costs for a Perdana V6 for the same period are significantly lower than specified by the provincial government and because since October 2004 no warranty claims for defective cars have been made by this government Proton received.

Perak Province - whose government is provided by the Pakatan Rakyat Party - raised the same objections to the use of the Proton Perdana V6 and recently acquired a fleet of Toyota Camry to replace the Perdanas. It was stated that after three years of operation, the service costs for the Perdanas were so high that purchasing the Camrys would save money. The province of Penang also stated that it would replace its fleet of Proton Perdana V6s with new vehicles if necessary and put the repair costs at around RM 30,000. Here, too, the Perdana V6 are to be replaced by Toyota Camry.

The Sabah Provincial Government has purchased 38 Volvo S80 replacements for its Perdana V6 fleet.
