Terengganu ( yawi ترڠڬانو, formerly spelled Trengganu ; Thai ตรัง กา นู , RTGS Trangkanu ) is a state in Malaysia .

location

Terengganu is located near the Thai border, in the northeast of the Malay Peninsula and has an area of 12,955 km². The Perhentian Islands and Redang , which belong to the state, are located in the Gulf of Thailand , with which Terengganu has a coastline of 225 kilometers. On the mainland, the state is bordered by Pahang to the southwest and Kelantan to the northwest .

history

The Srivijaya Empire , Majapahit and the neighboring Siam were important empires in which Terengganu was integrated as a vassal state . In 1909 the Sultanate became a British Protectorate and later part of the Unfederated Malay States . During World War II , it was occupied by the Japanese who returned it to Thailand in October 1943. This measure was reversed after the British reconquered Malaysia.

economy

The oil industry, with huge petrochemical plants near Paka and Kijal, is the main industry. Many joint ventures emerged between the Malaysian state oil company Petronas and multinationals . Fruits like bananas , watermelon , durian and rambutan are important agricultural products.

population

About one million people live in Terengganu. Not many Indian and Chinese immigrants came to Terangganu, so Malay culture is more dominant than in other Malaysian states. Over 90% of the population are Malays , around 4% Chinese and around 0.5% Indian. There are also other minorities.

politics

The Islamist PAS ruled Terengganu from 1999 to 2004 . In the 2004 elections, the UMNO regained a majority.

The PAS was able to rely on a broad Muslim majority as the overwhelming majority of the population are Malays . Still, the Islamists avoided restricting the ethnic minorities too much, especially the Chinese, who are by far the largest and most affluent minority in Malaysia. In national elections, the PAS presumably also needs the votes of the minorities to win, because only about 60% of the population is Muslim and it is unlikely that the overwhelming majority of Malays will turn away from the UMNO. That is why the PAS wooed the Chinese in Terengganu. In Terengganu there was still beer and pork to buy (at high prices), although their consumption “ haram ”, impure, is not in accordance with Islam.

Since 2003 it is no longer allowed to use the services of a tourist guide who is of the opposite sex. If you go on a family outing, you have to split the family and make visits separately for women and men.
