Duli Yang Maha Mulia Al Wathiqu Billah, Al-Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Ibni Almarhum Al-Sultan Mahmud Al-Muktafi Billah Shah Al-Haj (born January 22, 1962 in Kuala Terengganu , Terengganu ) is the 17th Sultan of Terengganu and was from 2007 to 2011 the 13th Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia .

Life

Mizan Zainal Abidin received his university education in Australia and Great Britain . He has been married to Sultanah Nur Zahirah since March 28, 1996. The couple have three sons and four daughters.

On May 15, 1998, he was crowned Sultan of Terengganu. At 36, he was the youngest ever holder of this title. Since April 26, 1999, he was Deputy King of Malaysia.

According to the principle of rotation, he was elected on November 3, 2006 by the nine sultans of Malaysia as the successor to Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin , the Raja of Perlis , to the 13th Yang di-Pertuan Agong ("first among the highest noble highs", corresponds to the title of king). The official inauguration and accession to the throne took place on April 26, 2007. The fact that a new king is elected every five years is unique in the world (cf. Elective Monarchy ). The office in Malaysia is primarily of a representative nature; political decisions are made by parliament and government. At the same time, the king symbolizes the continuity of the country's traditional Malay-Muslim culture, is considered the highest guardian of these traditions and the symbolic head of the Muslims in the country.

His son Tengku Muhammad Ismail was declared regent of Terengganu on November 12, 2006 at the age of only eight. Until he comes of age , he is supported by a three-member Regency Council.
