Abdul Halim Mu'adzam was the second son of al-Marhum Sultan Badlishah ibni al-Marhum Sultan Abdul Hamid Halim Shah , who was Sultan of Kedah from 1943 to 1958. al-Marhum just means "the deceased" and is added to the name in Malaysia. After attending local schools in Kedah, he attended the Kolej Sultan Abdul Hamid in Alor Setar between 1946 and 1948 . He then earned a degree in Social and Administrative Sciences at Wadham College of Oxford University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from (BA Social Science and Public Administration). After his return to Malaysia he worked in the administrative service, first in the District Office of Alor Setar and then in the Treasury of the Sultanate of Kedah. After the death of his older brother, he was appointed Raja Muda on August 6, 1949 , and thus crown prince .

When his father died on July 13, 1958, he succeeded him as Sultan of Kedah and has been ruler of this state ever since. Associated with this was membership in the body of federal rulers, from whose midst the King of Malaysia is elected every five years.

After he was viceroy between 1965 and 1970, Abdul Halim Mu'adzam was elected for the first time to Yang di-Pertuan Agong on July 23, 1970 as the successor to Ismail Nasiruddin Shah , Sultan of Terengganu . He held the office of electoral king from September 21, 1970 until his replacement by the Sultan of Kelantan , Yahya Petra , on September 21, 1975. During his reign he was honored with numerous domestic and foreign medals, including the collar of Chrysanthemum Order (1970), the Knighthood of the Order of Saint John (1972), the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath (1972), the Chakri Order (2013) and the Grand Cross of the Order of Charles III.

Between 2006 and 2011 he was again viceroy, before he was elected ruler on October 14, 2011 by the nine-member sultan's committee to succeed the Sultan of Terangganu, Mizan Zainal Abidin . On the day he was sworn in on December 13, 2011, he became the 14th  Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia and at the same time the oldest monarch in the country's history. He was also the first electoral king of Malaysia to hold this office twice. The coronation took place on April 26, 2012. As a monarch he primarily had representative tasks, was seen as a guarantor for the preservation of the national traditions and was revered as the highest religious representative in the predominantly Muslim country .

In September 2017, Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah died at the age of 89 in Alor Setar.
