from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Muhammad V (born October 6, 1969 as Tengku Muhammad Faris Petra in Kota Bharu ) is the incumbent sultan of Kelantan . He was proclaimed Sultan on September 13, 2010, succeeding his father, Sultan Ismail Petra , who was declared unfit for office due to illness. From December 13, 2016 to January 6, 2019, Muhammad was also the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong King of Malaysia .

Life

At the age of 16 he became Crown Prince (Tengku Mahkota) of Kelantan in October 1985. In Oxford he studied diplomacy at St Cross College and the Oxford Center for Islamic Studies. He completed his studies in 1991. St Cross College awarded him an Honorary Fellowship on February 28, 2018.

Succession crisis

In May 2009, his father, Sultan Ismail Petra, suffered a severe stroke . He was treated at the Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore . In his absence, Faris was made regent on May 25th. On September 16, 2009, Faris released his younger brother, Tengku Muhammad Fakhry Petra, from the heir to the throne, which regulates the succession in the event of the Sultan's permanent incapacity to rule.

In December, Fakhry sued the court against his dismissal and asked the State Secretariat in a letter to reverse all actions and decisions of the regent since the sultan's illness. In January 2010, the High Court dismissed Fakhry's lawsuit.

In another dispute, the private secretary Sultan Ismail Petras “declared” the chairman of the Heir apparent, Tengku Abdul Aziz Tengku Mohd Hamzah, as regent. This appointment was challenged by Faris in court.

Sultan of Kelantan

On September 13, 2010, Muhammad Faris Petra was proclaimed the 29th Sultan of Kelantan under the state constitution. He took the ruler named Muhammad V on. However, his father and predecessor, Sultan Ismail Petra, appealed to the federal court to have his appointment declared unconstitutional. Sultan Ismail Petra has not fully recovered from the 2009 stroke.

Muhammad V took part in the Conference of Federal Rulers for the first time in October 2010 as a full member. He was recognized by the rulers of the other states as the new sultan of Kelantan.

In October 2011 the conference of the federal rulers elected Sultan Muhammad V as deputy Yang Di-Pertuan Agong.

Tenure as King of Malaysia

Five years later, on October 14, 2016, the conference elected him as the next Yang di-Pertuan Agong , the head of state of Malaysia. His five-year term began on December 13, 2016, when he succeeded Abdul Halim , the Sultan of Kedah . He is divorced from his former wife, Tengku Zubaidah Tengku Norudin; Since November 28, 2018 he has been married to the Russian Oksana Voevodina for the second time . On January 6, 2019, Muhammad abdicated as king. He had suspended this office since November 2018 due to medical treatment.

His younger brother, Crown Prince Tengku Muhammad Faiz Petra , currently represents him as ruler of Kelantan.
