Ismail Petra
Sultan Ismail Petra Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Yahya Petra (born November 11, 1949 in Kota Bharu , Kelantan , Unfederated Malay States ; † September 28, 2019 ) was Sultan of Kelantan, Malaysia from March 30, 1979 to September 13, 2010. Due to illness, he was replaced by his son in 2010, Tengku Muhammad Faris Petra, the Sultan Muhammad V was proclaimed.
Life
His father was Sultan Yahya Petra and his mother is Tengku Zainab .
Succession crisis
In May 2009, Ismail Petra suffered a severe stroke. He was treated at the Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore. In his absence, Faris was made regent on May 25th.
On September 13, 2010, Muhammad Faris Petra was proclaimed the 29th Sultan of Kelantan under the state constitution. He took the ruler's name Muhammad V. However, his father and predecessor, Sultan Ismail Petra, appealed to the federal court to have his appointment declared unconstitutional. Sultan Ismail Petra has not fully recovered from the 2009 stroke.
On September 16, 2009, Faris released his younger brother, Tengku Muhammad Fakhry Petra, from the heir to the throne, which regulates the succession in the event of the Sultan's permanent incapacity to rule.
In December, Fakhry sued the court against his dismissal and asked the State Secretariat in a letter to reverse all actions and decisions of the regent since the sultan's illness. In January 2010, the High Court dismissed Fakhry's lawsuit.
In another dispute, the private secretary Sultan Ismail Petras “declared” the chairman of the Heir apparent, Tengku Abdul Aziz Tengku Mohd Hamzah, as regent. This appointment was challenged by Faris in court.
Marriage and children
Ismail Petra was married to Yang Maha Mulia Raja Perempuan . With Raja Perempuan he had four children:
- Tengku Muhammad Faris Petra ( Muhammad V. )
- Tengku Muhammad Faiz Petra
- Tengku Muhammad Fakhry Petra
- Tengku Amalin A'Ishah Putri
Ismail Petra remarried on December 23, 2007 (Che Puan Elia Suhana binti Ahmad ).
But it was reported that Ismail Petra filed for divorce in Syariah High Court on March 9, 2010. Soon after, however, the Chief Registrar of the court, Abu Bakar Abdullah Kutty , reported that the Sultan had not submitted this request himself, but that someone else had acted on his behalf.
