from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sultan Yahya Petra ibni Almarhum Sultan Ibrahim , GCMG , (born December 10, 1917 in Istana Balai Besar , Kota Bharu ; † March 29, 1979 in Istana Negara , Kuala Lumpur , Malaysia ) was the sixth Yang di-Pertuan Agong (Elected King) of Malaysia from September 21, 1975 until his death and the twelfth (10th) Sultan of Kelantan (1960–1979).

Life

Tengku Yahya Petra was born in Istana Balai Besar, Kota Bharu . He was the second son of Sultan Ibrahim ibni Almarhum Sultan Muhammad IV (born 1897; ruled 1944–1960) but the first of his concubine, Cik (Embong binti Encik Daud, 1899–1971), who was later passed on by their son to Che Ampuan Besar was charged.

Yahya Petra was brought up by his childless uncle, Tengku Ismail , who later became Sultan Ismail ibni Almarhum Sultan Muhammad IV . He received his education at the Francis Light School in Penang before continuing his studies in England . His uncle, Sultan Ismail, made him Tengku Temenggong on July 21, 1939. And later he was made Tengku Bendahara (February 6, 1945) by his father , who ruled as Sultan Ibrahim at the time . He served in various official positions in Kelantan from 1941 to 1948.

Controversy over the succession to the throne in Kelantan

Tengku Indra Petra was the eldest son of Sultan Ibrahim and the older half-brother of Yahya Petra. After Sultan Ibrahim succeeded his childless brother Sultan Ismail , Tengku Indra Petra became Heir Apparent (Raja Muda) on October 25, 1944. Due to tensions with his father, however, he was deposed and excluded from the line of succession (February 1, 1948). On the same day, Tengku Yahya Petra was installed in place of his brother with the title Tengku Mahkota .

Tengku Indra Petra began a political career and became a Member of Parliament (MP) in the first election of the confederation in 1955. His descendants have repeatedly contested the exclusion from the line of succession.

Indra Petra also did not take part in the installation of Sultan Yahya Petra's successor, Sultan Ismail Petra , but Tengku Panglima Raja Tengku Ahmad, who was already president of Sultan Yahya Petra. Tengku Panglima Raja is the father of the former Sultanah of Johor, Sultanah Zanariah binti Tengku Ahmad .

Enthronement

Sultan Yahya Petra succeeded his father on the throne one day after his death on July 9, 1960. He was enthroned on July 17, 1961 at Istana Balai Besar, Kota Bharu.

Election as deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong

Sultan Yahya Petra was installed as deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong on September 21, 1970 and served in that office until September 20, 1975.

Choice for Yang di-Pertuan Agong

When the election of the sixth Yang di-Pertuan Agong came up, the oldest regents asked Sultan Abu Bakar of Pahang ( Pahang ) and Sultan Ismail of Johor not to stand for election. Yahya Petra also initially turned down a nomination because he recently had a severe stroke, but he changed his mind and was elected immediately. His term began on September 21, 1975.

Events in the tenure

Malaysia's second prime minister Tun Abdul Razak died on January 14, 1976, just four months after Yahya Petra took office. In 1977 a state of emergency had to be declared in Kelantan due to political turbulence and subsequent violent clashes.

Death and burial

Yahya Petra died in his sleep, apparently of a heart attack in the Istana Negara on March 29, 1979. His coffin was displayed in the Istana Negara for a day in state mourning and then transported by plane to Kota Bharu, where he was buried in the Langgar Royal Mausoleum .
