Form of government

Head of state

Nine of the 13 states are constitutional monarchies , also known as Malay states . These include the seven sultanates of Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Pahang, Perak, Selangor and Terengganu. In Perlis the monarch is called Raja . In contrast to the eight states mentioned above, which are hereditary monarchies , in Negeri Sembilan the head of state, the Yamtuan Besar , is elected by local rulers.

The four states of Malacca, Penang, Sabah and Sarawak, which emerged from the former British crown colonies , each have a governor appointed by the central government, the Yang di-Pertua Negeri , as the representative head of state.

executive

At the head of the governments of the 13 states is a prime minister appointed by the respective sultan or governor according to the majority in parliament ( Westminster system ). His name in the nine monarchies is Menteri Besar, those in the four states without a ruling family Chief Minister . In eight states the Barisan Nasional is the government, the five states Kelantan, Kedah, Penang, Perak and Selangor will be governed by the federally opposition Pakatan Rakyat after the 2008 elections .

The three federal territories are administered by the Ministry of the Federal Territories of the central government.

legislative branch

All states have a unicameral parliament that is responsible for legislating. For the areas of law in which the constituent states can be active, see the federal structure of Malaysia .
