Yang di-Pertua Negeri

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yang di-Pertua Negeri (literally “Speaker of the State” in Malay ) is the official title of the ceremonial head of state of the Malaysian states without their own ruling family, i.e. Penang , Malacca , Sabah and Sarawak . They are appointed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (Supreme Ruler), the King of Malaysia, on the proposal of the Prime Minister.

Before 1976, the heads of state of Penang, Malacca and Sarawak were called Governor (English for governor ) and Yang di-Pertua Negeri in Malay, whereas the head of state of Sabah was called Yang di-Pertua Negara in both languages .

When Singapore was given its own government under British sovereignty in 1959, it also had a Yang di-Pertuan Negara . Even when Singapore was part of Malaysia between 1963 and 1965, the title continued to be used by the state's governor. It was not until Singapore gained independence in 1965 that the title was abolished.

Since 1976 the heads of state of Penang, Malacca, Sabah and Sarawak have been dubbed Yang di-Pertua Negeri in both languages .

A Yang di-Pertua Negeri may use the suffix Tuan Yang Terutama (TYT) or, in English, His Excellency (" His Excellency ").
