Juhar Mahiruddin

TYT Tun Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Juhar bin Haji Mahiruddin , SMN , SPDK , (born November 5, 1953 in Pulau Tambisan ) is a Malaysian politician.

Juhar is the incumbent 10th Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sabah , the ceremonial head of state of the Malaysian state of Sabah . He was previously a member of Dewan Rakyat and its deputy spokesman from 1990 to 1999. Juhar is a founding member of the Sabah national association of the United Malays National Organization (UMNO).

Life

Juhar Mahiruddin was born in 1953 on Tambisan Island , an island off the coast of the Sandakan Division in Sabah . His father, Mahiruddin Husin, was a member of the then United Sabah National Organization (USNO). His younger sister, Armani Mahiruddin , is the acting Vice President of the Dewan Negara .

He graduated from Wolverhampton Polytechnic with a Bachelor of Laws in 1977 and was admitted to the Lincoln's Inn Bar in 1980 . From 1981 to 1982 he worked in the senior civil service and then as a self-employed person from 1982 to 1985.

Political career

Juhar joined the USNO, which at the time belonged to the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition government , and participated in two unsuccessful election campaigns before he succeeded in entering the Malaysian parliament in the 1990 national elections for the Kinabatangan constituency . He was a Member of Parliament from October 21, 1990 to November 29, 1999. At the beginning of the parliamentary term he was elected as Deputy Speaker of Parliament and remained in that position throughout his tenure as a member of Parliament.

The USNO has been going downhill since 1976, when they had to hand over the government to BERJAYA . The party was dissolved in 1991 and Juhar was involved in the negotiations, which culminated in the implementation of the UMNO in the Sabah party landscape and the admission of the former USNO members to the UMNO.

He was not allowed to run again in the 1999 national elections, but he continued to work in politics. On December 15, 2002, he was appointed Speaker of the Sabah Legislative Assembly . He held this office until December 31, 2010, when he was appointed 10th Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sabah by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin . He was sworn in on January 1, 2011.

Private life

Juhar is married to Norlidah RM Jasni. The couple have four children.
