BERJAYA was a political party in the Malaysian state of Sabah and stands for Parti Bersatu Rakyat Jelata Sabah or Sabah People's United Front . The party emerged from a cooperation between Sabah's first Prime Minister Tun Fuad Stephens and the former Secretary General of the United Sabah National Organization (USNO), Harris Salleh . The party has been a coalition partner of the Barisan Nasional , Malaysia's ruling coalition , since its inception on July 15, 1975 .

BERJAYA ruled Sabah from 1976 to 1985. Tun Fuad Stephens was previously President of the United Pasok Momogun Kadazan Organization (UPKO), an ethnic party that claims to be the voice of the indigenous tribes of the Kadazan-Dusun and Murut in Sabah and the Orang Asli on the peninsula Malaysia understood. The party was originally called the United National Kadazan Organization (UNKO) before being renamed UPKO on September 16, 1963 in connection with Sabah's independence and Malaysia Day .

When BERJAYA won the state elections in 1976, Tun Fuad was appointed fifth Prime Minister of Sabah, the second time he had held this post. He succeeded Mohammad Said bin Keruak from the USNO. Tun Fuad died in a plane crash in Kota Kinabalu on June 6, 1976 , 44 days after his inauguration as Prime Minister. The accident came to be known as the Double Six Tragedy . Several other members of the government were also killed with him. Harris Salleh subsequently took over the post, becoming the sixth Prime Minister of Sabah.

In the 1981 elections, BERJAYA won again, this time with an overwhelming majority of 44 of the 48 seats. In 1984 the party member Joseph Pairin Kitingan left the party and founded the Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS). The newly founded party ousted BERJAYA from the government in the 1985 state elections.

In the 1990 elections, voter support for BERJAYA had obviously melted away; the party never won a single seat. She then brought about a merger with the USNO to establish the United Malays National Organization (UMNO) in Sabah, which operates on the Malaysian peninsula . USNO's party chairman Tun Mustapha became Sabah's first UMNO chairman, while Harris was appointed merely an advisor.
