Double Six Tragedy ( German double six tragedy ), also known as Double Six Crash , describes the plane crash on June 6, 1976 in Kota Kinabalu , Malaysia . The Sabah Air plane coming from Labuan crashed while approaching Kota Kinabalu International Airport in the suburb of Sembulan. All occupants of the plane were killed in the crash, including Tun Fuad Stephens , the then Prime Minister of Sabah . The name Double Six is derived from the day and month of the disaster and has been impressed on the collective memory in Malaysia under this name.
Passengers
The plane carried politicians and members of the state government of Sabah state. In addition to the Prime Minister, the following persons were on board:
- Finance Minister Datuk Salleh Sulong,
- Minister of Housing and Local Government Datuk Peter Mojuntin ,
- Minister of Communication and Labor Chong Thien Vun,
- Assistant Minister Darius Binion,
- State Secretary in the Ministry of Finance of Sabah Datuk Wahid Peter Andau,
- Director of the Economic Planning Department Dr. Syed Hussein Wafa,
- Isak Atan ( Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah Private Secretary ),
- Corporal Said Mohammad (bodyguard of Tun Fuad Stephens),
- Captain Gandhi Nathan (the pilot) and
- Johari Stephens, the eldest son of Tun Fuad Stephens.
Causes of the crash
The aircraft was an Australian GAF Nomad N.22B . The accident happened on the return flight from Labuan, where the politicians met with the Malaysian Finance Minister Tengku Razaleigh and the Prime Minister of Sarawak, Rahmaa Yakop. The machine crashed at 3:50 p.m. while approaching the old airport of Kota Kinabalu. The reason for the crash is unclear. Immediately after the accident, there was speculation about a crime due to the political circumstances at the time. The Australian government sent four investigators to help determine the cause. A mechanical failure could be ruled out, but preliminary investigations indicated a possible overload as one of the factors behind the crash. The real reason for the accident remained in the dark; the investigation files were classified as classified .
On the following day, the previous Deputy Prime Minister of Sabah, Harris Salleh , was sworn in as the 6th Prime Minister of Sabah.
memorial
The place of the crash is marked with the Double Six Monument ( mal. Tugu Peringatan Double Six ), a memorial in the form of a stone obelisk, which was erected shortly after the accident. The memorial is located in the Sembulan district within the Grace Garden building complex in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah on Jalan Pantai Sembulan.
