Musa Aman, Prime Minister of Sabah

The Prime Minister of Sabah (malay: Ketua Menteri Sabah, English: Chief Minister of Sabah) is the head of government of the Malaysian state of Sabah . Musa Aman from the Barisan Nasional coalition party has held this office since 2003 . As in other parts of the Malaysian Federation , the Westminster system is used as a parliamentary form of government ; H. the leader of the party with the largest number of seats in the Dewan Undangan Negeri Sabah , the legislative assembly of Sabah, is appointed Prime Minister of Sabah. The Prime Minister is the one who has the support of the legislature behind him. The Prime Minister is appointed by Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sabah , the head of state of the state. Compared to other states in Malaysia, the office of prime minister held a rather mixed group of people of different ethnic origins and religions. The post was already represented by members of the Kadazandusun, Bajau and Suluk ethnic groups, by Malay, Chinese and mixed race who were themselves Muslims, Buddhists or Christians.

Rotation system: 1994-2005

The rotation system was practiced in the state of Sabah to balance political power between the three main groups in the state - the Christian Bumiputras , the Muslim Bumiputras, and the Malays of Chinese descent. These groups and their interests were represented by a large number of political parties within the Barisan Nasional coalition . The system was introduced by the former Prime Minister of Malaysia Mahathir Mohamad after the ruling Barisan Nasional remained in power in the elections in Sabah state in 1994 despite her electoral defeat. This was made possible by defectors from the ranks of the victorious Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS). Bernard Giluk Dompok , who later became Prime Minister himself, and Joseph Kurup were among the defectors .

The rotation system provided that the post of prime minister was held by a political leader from the ranks of the three groups mentioned for two years and that the post was then passed on to a political leader from the next group. The first prime minister within the rotation system was Sakaran Dandai of the United Malays National Organization (UMNO) in 1994. Sakaran did not remain in his post for the entire term and was replaced by UMNO politician Salleh Said Keruak . In 1996, Yong Teck Lee of the Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) became the next Prime Minister, followed by Dompok, who represented the Christian Bumiputras from 1998 onwards. His term of office also lasted less than two years and he was inherited from UMNO in 1999 by Osu Sukam . In 2001 he was followed by Chong Kah Kiat of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). Aman from UMNO took over the post in 2003 and is the incumbent Prime Minister of Sabah. The rotation system was abolished in 2005 after the resounding victory of Barisan Nasional in Sabah in the 2004 Malaysian elections.
