The Sabah Progressive Party ( SAPP , also Parti Maju Sabah ) is a political party that has its roots in the Malaysian state of Sabah .
Dissidents from the Parti Bersatu Sabah party, led by the former Prime Minister of Sabah Yong Teck Lee , founded the SAPP on January 21, 1994 and joined the Barisan Nasional coalition government with the new party . In September 2008, the SAPP officially left the BN in order to be able to operate an independent policy. The party has two MPs in the Malaysian Parliament and two MPs in the Legislative Assembly of Sabah (as of 2010).
Withdrawal from the government coalition
In the national elections on March 8, 2008, the SAPP won two parliamentary seats. Following the election, several political parties in Sabah called for greater independence of the state from the Malaysian government.
In response, the chairman of the SAPP, Yong Teck Lee, announced on June 18, 2008 that the party intended to introduce a vote of no confidence in Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in Dewan Rakyat on June 23 . The aim is for the premier to resign. The party accused the government of insufficiently representing the interests of Sabah and said that it was the "moment of opportunity" for the good of Sabah, including its autonomy, the return of Labuan and the increase in the share of the income from oil production to 20% want to use.
The majority of Sabah's population showed up with the SAPP's vote of no confidence in Prime Minister Abdullah, who was accused of a number of irregularities, along with allegations of bribery and abuse of power. In return, the coalition committee sent an ultimatum to the SAPP on August 26, in which the party was asked to declare itself within 30 days or to look forward to appropriate consequences.
On September 17, 2008, the Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) left the Barisan Nasional coalition government . But this decision also had its price: the deputy party chairman, one of the vice-presidents and the head of the youth organization opposed the decision and left the party. Another 2,000 party members expressed their solidarity with the dissidents and also left the party.
