The United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organization (UPKO) is a political party with roots in the Malaysian state of Sabah . The party sees itself as an ethnically rooted organization which, as the voice of the Kadazan-Dusun and Murut in Sabah and the Orang Asli on the Malay Peninsula, advocates the rights and promotion of its indigenous members. The party’s founder and chairman is Bernard Giluk Dompok .

history

The party was founded as Parti Demokrat Sabah (PDS) by Bernard Giluk Dompok and other political leaders from the Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) shortly after the elections to the state parliament in Sabah in 1994. Only later was the party renamed UPKO.

In 2009 the party founded four district associations in Perak on the Malay Peninsula. The party tried to make itself the political spokesman for the indigenous group of the Orang Asli.

In July 2012, the deputy party chairman Wilfred Bumburing resigned from the party and founded the reform party Angkatan Perubahan Sabah (APS) on July 29, 2012 . Other party members such as Vice President Maijol Mahap followed his decision.

Status within the party system

UPKO is one of the parties of the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition government .

Differentiation from other parties

This new UPKO had no relation to the former United Pasokmomogun Kadazan Organization , which was also abbreviated with the acronym UPKO. The name of the "new UPKO" contains the words "Kadazandusun" and "Murut" and the party's logo is no longer the water buffalo , but the silhouette of Mount Kinabalu . Most political observers also assume that the "Kadazandusun nationalism" that prevailed in the former UPKO has no meaning in today's UPKO.

Despite the similar name, it must not be confused with the United Pasok Momogun Organization (Pertubuhan Pasok Momogun Bersatu) party .

ISA legislation

On September 23, 2008 UPKO's General Secretary Datuk Wilfred Madius Tangau and three of his Barisan Nasional counterparts - the General Secretaries of the MCA , Gerakan and MIC parties - addressed the Prime Minister from Kota Kinabalu. They called for a review of the Internal Security Act (ISA) Madius said his party supports the position of former de facto Justice Minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim that the ISA should only be used against people who endanger national security, such as terrorists. He noted that in most cases other public order laws could be used.
