Controversy

In June 2008, Dompok publicly opposed the construction of the 500-kilometer Sabah-Sarawak gas pipeline . Instead, he favored the use of natural gas in Sabah and the implementation of industrial projects for the production of urea and plastics as an alternative. Prime Minister Abdullah had previously announced on May 31, 2008 that the pipeline plans would be abandoned in favor of a gas turbine power plant , but after the intervention of Petronas he buckled and favored the realization of both projects. In October 2008 Dompok announced that he and his party UPKO might leave the Barisan Nasional coalition government if the pipeline project is not put on hold; However, he relativized this announcement a short time later.
