The Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities (MPIC) or Kementerian Perusahaan Perladangan dan Komoditi (German: Ministry for Plantation and Raw Materials Industry ) is a ministry of the State of Malaysia . Its tasks are to promote the plantation industry - mainly palm oil, rubber, precious woods, cocoa, tobacco, kenaf , pepper and sago.

history

The Ministry of Primary Industries was founded in 1972 in recognition of the fact that the promotion of the primary industries would be the basis for Malaysia's economic development . The tasks of the ministry at that time lay in the development of the tin ore and rubber industries. The Ministry's mandate was later expanded to include other industries such as palm oil, cocoa, mineral resources, pineapple and tobacco. In the course of restructuring, the ministry was given its current name in 2004. The pepper industry - previously under the supervision of the Ministry of Agriculture - came to the MPIC, while the branches of industry dealing with forests, mineral resources and geosciences were transferred to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment .

tasks

In addition to its original tasks - the promotion of the plantation industry with the main branches of palm oil, precious woods, natural rubber and cocoa - the MPIC is also involved in the development and promotion of the cultivation of kenaf , sago and jatropha , which could contribute to the economic growth of Malaysia in the future.

With the aim of making the extractive industry more dynamic and competitive through the production of high-quality, commodity-based economic goods, the Ministry has developed a strategy for the period from 2011 to 2020, the National Commodities Policy , the key points of which are based on the following economic policy papers:

  • 5-year plan for Malaysia (9th and 10th Malaysia plans);
  • National Agriculture Policy Three (NAP 3);
  • 3. Industrial Master Plan 2009-2020 (IMP 3);
  • National Timber Industry Policy 2009-2020 (NATIP) and
  • National Biofuel Policy

minister

The current minister has been Douglas Uggah Embas since May 16, 2013. He is supported by six corporations under public law and five advisory bodies.

The predecessor of Embas from April 10, 2009 to 2013 was Bernard Giluk Dompok , who had taken over the office from Peter Chin. Peter Chin was its first minister after the creation of the ministry in 2004.
