Penampang is a small town in the Malaysian state of Sabah . The city, which belongs to the administrative district of the same name ( Penampang District ), borders directly on Kota Kinabalu and thus has the status of a suburb. It is part of the West Coast Division area to which the districts of Kota Kinabalu , Ranau , Kota Belud , Tuaran , Penampang, Putatan and Papar belong.

Origin of name

The name penampang (big rock) comes from the Kadazan language and refers to the huge boulders that were found in the vicinity of the place a long time ago.

Culture

Penampang is often viewed as the Kadazan stronghold in Sabah and the center of their political and cultural development. The assembly hall of the Kadazan-Dusun Cultural Association (KDCA) is the scene of many traditional Kadazan festivals, including the annual Kaamatan (harvest festival) as the main cultural event.

The Monsopiad Cultural Village is located in Penampang . Monsopiad was the name of a warrior known for chopping off the head of his enemies and lining up the skulls over his front door to warn his enemies.
