Tamparuli is a small town on the west coast of the state of Sabah in Malaysia . It is located about 30 kilometers northeast of the capital Kota Kinabalu and is part of the Tuaran district in the West Coast Division . Tamparuli is a sub-district of Tuaran.

Demographics

Of the 31,000 inhabitants of Tamparuli, 75% belong to the Kadazan-Dusun ethnic group , followed by Chinese (15%) and Bajau (8%).

Origin of name

The name Tamparuli is borrowed from the words Di tampar oleh air , which means struck by the water . It is said that Tamparuli was once supposed to be visited by Bruneian traders who, however, were unable to reach the settlement upstream due to the rapid current. Later, Di tampar oleh air then tamparuli shortened.

history

The origins of the city go back to a village that stood in the raised plaza on the river bank and was known as Kampung Pengait . The name means something like village of the headhunters . Records of British colonialists begin in the 1930s; possibly activities of the North Borneo Chartered Company took place much earlier.

Over the city

Like many small towns in Sabah, the city consists of some newer concrete houses and also old wooden houses. Tamparuli is on the highway from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan and is therefore a popular stop for a rest. Tamparuli is the starting point for white water rides on the Sungai Kiulu.

Within Tamparuli there are strong efforts to form a separate district with its own administration (district office) . In order to encourage this, the impression is given on some websites that Tamparuli already has the status of a district. In fact, the city is still part of the Tuaran District.

economy

Although the cultivation of rice and natural rubber is the main livelihood of the residents, there are only a few who can do this on a large scale, as there is little suitable land available. Many residents therefore live from small-scale agriculture and livestock farming as well as from growing fruit and vegetables. The products are usually offered for sale in the local market house (Pasar Tamu) . The median monthly income is between 180 and 200 euros.

Historic architecture

Tamparuli is one of the cities on the west coast of Sabah, whose historical buildings have been partially preserved to this day. These include, among other things

  • the land bridge over the Tuaran River built by British engineers in the 1930s,
  • a series of traditional shophouses consisting of two shophouses and a smaller house , which is directly connected to the market square (tamu) and
  • a two-storefront row of shops that was originally the second row behind a row of two shophouses. This row of two shop houses , located directly on the original tamu , no longer exists today. The two shophouses fell victim to a fire in 1976 and 2008 and were replaced by modern buildings.

Attractions

In addition to the historic shop houses, the most famous sight in Tamparuli is a long suspension bridge, which is sung about in the song Jambatan Tamparuli , a popular song of the Kadazan Dusun. Although a road bridge was built a little downstream for car traffic, the old suspension bridge remained as heavy rains flood the road bridge more often. When the suspension bridge finally fell victim to a storm in 2005, today's suspension bridge was built over the Sungai Tuaran a bit upstream .
