Konfrontasi
In mid-December 1963, the Indonesian side sent a commando unit consisting of 128 volunteers and 35 regular soldiers to the border area with Malaysia. The aim of the operation was first to take Kalabakan and then to march towards Tawau and Sandakan. On December 29, the unit encountered a camp with soldiers from the 3rd Royal Malaysian Regiment. The attackers managed to throw several hand grenades into the sleeping quarters of the soldiers who were completely unprepared for this attack. Seven soldiers and the commander were killed and another 19 wounded. After a two-hour battle, armed police units finally managed to force the attackers off to the north.
A memorial at the entrance to the town (Tugu Peringatan Kalabakan) commemorates the attack on Kalabakan and the men who perished while defending Kalabakan against the Indonesian invaders on December 29, 1963: Major Zainol Abidin Bin Hj Yaacob, Ismail Bin Mat, Abdullah Bin Abd Rahman, Abd Aziz Bin Abd Ghani, Mohamad Zain Bin Yaacob, Ismail Bin Mansor, Yusof Bin Sulong and Shamsuddin Bin Yasin.
