The Kalabakan ( Mal. Sungai Kalabakan ) or Kalabakan River is a river in the Malaysian state of Sabah on Borneo . It rises in the Maliau Basin, a hilly region near the border with Indonesia in the southeast of Sabah and runs from there to the confluence with Cowie Bay , which in turn opens up to the Celebes Sea.
geology
The Kalabakan essentially flows through two geological formations; in the upper reaches the Kapilit formation and in the lower reaches the Kalabakan formation. The Kapilit Formation is characterized by sandstone, siltstone and claystone, and coal layers can also be found there. The Kalabakan Formation, in turn, consists mainly of dark claystone with minor occurrences of sandstone and siltstone.
use
The Kalabakan is used by the local timber industry, including Aturmaju Resources Berhad, which operates from Kuala Lumpur, as a transport route for the tropical timber felled in the region. In 2004 an environmental study by the Office for Environmental Protection examined the possibility of using large parts of the site for the settlement of the palm oil industry.
fauna
At the Sungai Tawan, a tributary of the Kalabakan, Limnonectes paramacrodon , an endangered species of the real frog family , was located.
