Erasmus of the devil
Erasmus von Teu (f) fel, Freiherr von Gundersdorff († around 1552 in Constantinople ) was an officer in the Habsburg service. He was last commander in the Turkish War of 1552 .
Life
He came from an old baronial family. He had been in the military service of the Habsburgs from an early age . During the first siege of Vienna in 1529 he was colonel in the besieged city. After that he was a commander in Győr for a while . In 1552 Ferdinand I appointed him commander in the newly broken out Turkish war. According to some information, he was in the rank of General Field Marshal . Instead of waiting for the arrival of 7,000 reinforcements, he attacked the Ottomans with his 10,000 men and was defeated in August 1552 at Plášťovce . He was captured with 4,000 other soldiers. While other high-ranking prisoners were exchanged for high ransom, von Teufel brought them to Constantinople. After he refused to divulge information, he was executed.
