The Kinabatangan is the largest river in the Malaysian state of Sabah in Borneo . It rises in the middle of Sabah and runs strongly meandering from the highlands to the confluence with the Sulu Sea . The Kinabatangan with its headwaters and tributaries drains an area of 16,800 km² - about a quarter of the state of Sabah. In the lowlands, the Kinabatangan forms an approximately 4,000 square kilometer floodplain, 26,000 hectares of which are under nature conservation as the Hidupan Liar di Hilir Kinabatangan sanctuary (English "Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary").
geology
The environment in the upper reaches of the river consists of mountains and mountain peaks with altitudes between 500 and 1500 m. In the catchment area there are mainly layers of mudstone, silt, sandstone and limestone. The sandstone and the silt are generally poorly consolidated. The soils are sandy to loamy and in the mountains thin layers of fine to coarse sand.
Flora and fauna
The area includes tropical alluvial forests , oxbow lakes, swamps and mangrove forests and is considered a region of particularly high biodiversity . Here live among other Bornean orangutans , proboscis monkeys , Borneo pygmy elephants , Sunda clouded leopard and numerous bird, reptile, amphibian and fish species.
Due to the increasing settlement of the river banks, these habitats are considered threatened.
