William Sims Bainbridge (born October 12, 1940 ) is an American sociologist , communications scientist and sociologist of religion . Bainbridge is co-director of the Human-Centered Computing Division of the National Science Foundation (NSF) in Arlington , Virginia , and an adjunct professor at George Mason University , Virginia.

Bainbridge holds a PhD in Sociology from Harvard University . He then worked in the field of sociology of religion , where he dealt in particular with religious sects . Bainbridge has published numerous books and academic articles on the sociology of religion. His best-known book Satan's Power (published 1978) describes the Process Church sect, which he observed and infiltrated for years - a splinter group of Scientology - which operated a Satan cult .

Together with the sociologist Rodney Stark, Bainbridge published the fundamental works The Future of Religion (1985) and A Theory of Religion (1987). Also known is the book The Endtime Family: Children of God , published in 2002 , in which Bainbridge deals with the sect of God's children .

More recently, Bainbridge has shifted his focus to the sociology of computer games .
