Tuaran is a city in the Malaysian state of Sabah . Tuaran belongs to the administrative district of the same name ( Tuaran District ) and is located 27 kilometers north of the capital Kota Kinabalu and is part of the West Coast Division area to which the districts Kota Kinabalu , Ranau , Kota Belud , Tuaran, Penampang , Putatan and Papar belong.

Origin of name

It is believed that the name Tuaran derives from the Malay word tawaran , which translates as 'haggle' or 'sale'. Presumably this reflects the town's earlier role as a major marketplace, which the locals from the higher-lying villages used to sell their wares and to trade with the residents of the coast. Even today, the tamu, held weekly on Sunday mornings, is the second largest market in the area.

geography

Tuaran is located in the northwest of the island of Borneo between Kota Kinabalu and Kudat . The city is surrounded on three sides by the Sungai Tuaran River, which limits the expansion of the city. About 65% of the land area is hilly. Flat land exists only in the immediate coastal area and on the downstream side of the city of Tuaran from Tamparuli Tuaran to the mouth of the river.

Demographics

The population of Tuaran, according to the last census in 2010, is 3,253 and consists mainly of Kadazan-Dusun as well as a significant proportion of Chinese , Bajau and Malays . As in many other cities in Sabah, there are significant numbers of illegal immigrants from the nearby Philippines , especially from Sulu and Mindanao , who are not recorded in the population statistics.

Position of Tuarans in the district structure

The Tuaran District is divided into three subdistricts or regions (kawasan) : Sulaman, Kiulu and Tamparuli. The city of Tuaran forms the Mukim Tuaran Bandar in the Tamparuli region.

politics

Tuaran belongs to the parliamentary constituency "P.170 Tuaran". In the parliamentary elections in Malaysia in 2013 , the candidate of the coalition government Barisan Nasional Madius Bin Tangau won the day.

to eat and drink

Tuaran is home to the Lotud , an indigenous people. Their traditional liqueur called bahar is a fermented palm juice that is mixed with a tree bark (rosok) during the fermentation process , which colors the palm wine red. Chemists have confirmed the drink's high anti-oxidant content. The wine goes bad quickly and turns sour within a day. The taste of the drink is described as pungent and disgusting by the uninitiated.

A traditional noodle dish, the Tuaran mee, is served by street vendors . The pasta dough consists of egg yolk and flour, which gives the pasta a special egg taste when frying. The noodles are typically fried over high heat for 5–10 minutes until the noodles have a golden crust. Local vegetables such as sawi are also fried . The dish is served with charseow - slices of grilled Chinese sweet pork - and spring rolls.

Attractions

A striking building in the city is the nine-story Chinese pagoda , from which one has an excellent panoramic view of the city.

Near the city are the Mengkabong Water Village and the Penimbawan Water Village , two stilt-dwelling settlements of the Bajau.
