Kota Marudu is a city in the Malaysian state of Sabah . Kota Marudu belongs to the administrative district of the same name ( Kota Marudu District ) and is 90 kilometers northeast of Kota Kinabalu as the crow flies. The city, which is also called Bandau Kota Marudu from its earlier name , belongs to the Kudat Division area , which includes the districts of Kudat , Pitas and Kota Marudu .
Demographics
According to the last census in 2010, the city of Kota Marudu has 8,716 inhabitants, mostly Dusun , Rungus , Bajau , Orang Sungai and Chinese. As in many other cities in Sabah, there are significant numbers of illegal immigrants from the nearby Philippines , especially from Sulu and Mindanao , who are not recorded in the population statistics.
Origin of name
The former name 'Bandau' for Kota Marudu is borrowed from the word mondou from the language of the Kadazandusun 'Mondou'. According to a legend, mondou is a buffalo-like creature that is feared by the locals. The later name 'Kota Marudu' comes from a famous fortification that the warrior Syariff Osman had built on Marudu Bay to protect it from settlement by the British.
Attractions
About 40 kilometers from the city is the Sorinsim waterfall. In Taman Sagabon there is an agricultural research station on Lake Buyut.
The annual Corn Festival is a reminder that Kota Marudu's prosperity and development is primarily due to its agricultural products. The festival is accompanied by a series of exhibitions and competitions, traditional sporting events and the coronation of the maize queen.

Kota Marudu belongs to the parliamentary constituency "P.168 Kota Marudu". In the parliamentary elections in Malaysia in 2013 , the candidate of the coalition government Barisan Nasional Johnity @ Maximus bin Ongkili won the day.
