Pensiangan is a small town in the Malaysian state of Sabah . The city is about 160 kilometers south of the capital Kota Kinabalu as the crow flies and is part of the Interior Division area . Administratively it belongs to the Nabawan district .

history

Pensiangan originally gave its name to Nabawan District, which was called Pensiangan District until 2004 .

In 1957 the colonial administration opened a district office in Pensiangan. As there were no roads in the area, the only means of getting around was by boat with an outboard motor, on horseback, or on foot. The district officers who were stationed in Pensiangan were therefore equipped with horses to be able to carry out their duties. A currentless cable laid along the footpath from Keningau to Pensiangan served as a telephone connection to the outside world, to which telephones could be connected if necessary. IC Peck was appointed the first district officer in early 1957. In the spring of 1974 the District Office was relocated to the newly founded Nabawan.

Demographics

According to the last census in 2010, the population of Pensiangan is 307 and consists almost entirely of Murut , who are the largest ethnic group. However, in the rural areas of Sabah it must be taken into account that the majority of the population is widely distributed over the entire area of a district.

This is due to the fact that the catchment area of the elementary school includes some extremely remote settlements that are several hours away and can only be reached by boat or on foot.

In addition to the usual course content, the school teaches traditional manual skills. So the students learn z. B. in "Pondok SK Pensiangan" the establishment of traditional dwellings and roof structures. The school has a kindergarten and a preschool as well as a canteen for all three facilities.

clinic

Pensinagan has a smaller hospital called Kesihatan Pensiangan Clinic. For more complicated interventions or emergencies, the patients have to be flown out by helicopter and taken to the hospital in Keningau. This service is carried out by the Sabah Air Aviation Flying Doctor Service . The town of Padang in front of the clinic serves as a helicopter landing pad.

Judiciary

Pensiangan is the seat of a Native Court (Makhama Anak Negeri). Native courts speak law on the basis of the Native Courts Enactment 1992 and taking into account the traditional jurisprudence of the ethnic groups of Sabaha, which result from the traditional customs ( adat ). A so-called oath stone is set up in front of the Pensiangan Native Court.
