history

Kudat in the 1890s

The city was founded by Alfred Hart Everett , an administrator of the North Borneo Chartered Company on December 7, 1881, and was the first capital of British North Borneo because of its strategic geographic location . After being devastated by pirates several times, the capital was relocated to Sandakan on the east coast in 1883 because of the better protected harbor .

In response to the death of Mat Salleh , the chiefs Mat Satur, Mat Daud and Kamunta raided the city with 400 followers on April 28, 1900.

In 1905 the city was almost completely destroyed by a fire.

From 1913 the North Borneo Chartered Company settled a smaller group of Lutheran Hakka Chinese from the province of Canton here at the instigation of the Basler Missionsgesellschaft . The total of about 600 people were distributed to Kudat, Menggatal , Telipok and Inanam and provided with a loan and tools. These beginnings were the basis for the still strong Chinese community of these four places.

Kudat was occupied by the Japanese on February 1, 1942. During the war, forced laborers were housed in Kudat, who were mainly used to build the airfield.

The British history-based administrative system and the office of resident were abolished in 1979.

politics

Kudat belongs to the parliamentary constituency "P.167 Kudat". In the parliamentary elections in Malaysia in 2013 , the candidate of the coalition government Barisan Nasional Datuk Abd Rahim Bin Bakri won the day.

Infrastructure

During the Second World War, the Japanese army built an airfield in Kudat. The workforce - consisting of locals and forced laborers from Java, Indonesia - used corals as a base layer for the runway. Many Indonesians died of disease and starvation during construction. In 1945, the United States Far East Air Force's B25 bombers attacked the airfield several times, rendering it unusable. Today's Kudat Airport, operated by Malaysia Airport Berhad , was partially built on the remains of the former Japanese airfield.

Kudat is home to a modern beach resort, the Kudat Golf & Marina Resort. The resort and its golf course were built on land reclaimed by the former Prime Minister of Sabah, Tun Mustapha , in the 1970s. Tun Mustapha came from Limau-Limauan, a village on the opposite side of Kudat Bay. The Kudat Golf Club , founded in 1906, is the oldest golf club on Borneo. Today's 18-hole golf course ( par 72 ) is also suitable for championships.

Other attractions include the nearby Rungus longhouses . Traditional brass gongs are made and honey is produced there.

Tanjung Simpang Mengayau , the northernmost point of the island of Borneo, is very close to Kudat .
