Alfred Hart Everett

Alfred Hart Everett (born October 1848 , † June 18, 1898 in London ) was a British civil servant and administrative employee in Borneo . He also made a name for himself as an ornithologist , natural scientist and zoological collector.

Life

Everett was born in the Norfolk Islands . In 1869 he went to Sarawak in the north-western part of Borneo to conduct natural history collections there. After two years, he entered the service of the Kingdom of Sarawak on behalf of the White Rajas of Borneo as British resident of the Baram district .

A man from the very beginning, he entered the service of what would later become the North Borneo Chartered Company before the royal charter was signed in September 1879 and was tasked with establishing law and order in the papar and abai. From 1881 he was made a resident of the West Coast Residency and tasked with building the new capital of British North Borneo in Kudat . For health reasons he resigned this position in 1883 to undergo treatment in England.

Everett returned to Borneo in early 1885 and was appointed by Charles Johnson Brooke as his consul to the court of the Sultan of Brunei that same year . His brother HH Everett also moved to Sarawak.

Equipped with a prospecting license from the North Borneo Chartered Company, he continued his natural history research in North Borneo and Sarawak.

In 1891, AH Everett became a full member of the British Ornithological Union.

Everett remained single and died in London on June 18, 1898 .

Zoological collection

Everett collected on behalf of Arthur Hay, 9th Marquess of Tweeddale , Walter Rothschild and other wealthy collectors. He became known for his collection of birds and mammals from Borneo and the Philippines.

Many of the animals Everett has collected have been exhibited in the Tring Museum and the British Museum .
