The FA Cup 1996/97 was the 116th staging of the world's oldest soccer cup tournament; The Football Association Challenge Cup , or FA Cup for short . The cup competition ended with the final at Wembley Stadium on May 17, 1997. The winner of this event was Chelsea . For Chelsea it was the second success in the FA Cup after 1970. Middlesbrough FC reached the final of the cup competition for the first time.

The FA Cup is played in rounds. Any team that has a certain level of performance and an appropriate playing field can take part. The game is played i. d. Usually only with a first leg. In the event of a tie, a second leg takes place. If the second leg also ends in a draw, the game goes into extra time or penalty shoot-out. Each winner receives a bonus from the television money, which is staggered according to the round.
