Merthyr Tydfil FC
The Merthyr Tydfil Football Club was a Welsh football club Merthyr Tydfil , which in English had to file played leagues pyramid until 2010 bankruptcy. A successor club was created under the name Merthyr Town .

Merthyr Tydfil FC was founded in 1945. There is no connection whatsoever to a football club of the same name that existed in the town between the world wars. Merthyr Tydfil joined the English Southern League and was able to win its Premier Division six times (1948, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1954, 1989). The last win meant on the one hand the most championships in this league (a record shared with Southampton FC ), and on the other hand an approval for the Football Conference , the highest league ever reached by the club. From 1995 Merthyr Tydfil played again in the Southern League.
Cup competitions
Since Wales had no football leagues of their own until 1992, all clubs played in the English league pyramid. These were then allowed to take part in two cup competitions, the English and the Welsh. While round 2 of the English Cup was the best result, Merthyr Tydfil won the Welsh Cup three times, namely in 1949, 1951 and 1987.
The victory in 1987 meant qualification for the European Cup Winners' Cup. Merthyr Tydfil then played in the Southern League Premier Division in the seventh level of the English league system and is thus the lowest-class club that has ever taken part in a European football competition. Merthyr Tydfil was eliminated in the first round against the Italian representative Atalanta Bergamo , themselves a second division, after a surprising 2-1 first leg win and a 0-2 defeat in Italy.
Merthyr Tydfil remained in the English system even after the creation of a Welsh league pyramid in 1992, and was therefore only allowed to take part in English competitions and could only have qualified for international competitions through these.
