Dan Vasile "Bursucul" Petrescu (born December 22, 1967 in Bucharest ) is a former Romanian football player and today's coach . The full-back played a total of 433 games in the Romanian League 1 , the Italian Serie A and the English Premier League . As a national player, he took part in the 1994 World Cup , the 1996 European Football Championship and the 2000 European Football Championship .

Career as a player

Petrescu started playing football at the age of ten for Romania's top club Steaua Bucharest . He made his debut on June 8, 1986 in the away game against FCM Brașov in Divizia A , when the championship win in 1985/86 from Steaua was already certain. In the 1986/87 season he played on loan for FC Olt . From 1987 Petrescu spent another four seasons at Steaua before moving to US Foggia in 1991 . In 1993 he moved within the Serie A to Genoa . A season later he moved to England to Sheffield Wednesday . For the 1995/96 season he moved to Chelsea . With Chelsea he won the 1997 FA Cup . In 1998 he won the League Cup and the European Cup Winners' Cup with the club . After breaking with the then coach Gianluca Vialli after losing to Manchester United , he never played for Chelsea again. For the 2000/01 season he moved to Bradford City . A season later he signed with Southampton FC . In 2002 he moved to FC Național Bucharest , where he ended his career in 2003.

National team

Petrescu played 95 games for the Romanian national soccer team between 1989 and 2000 , in which he scored twelve goals. On March 29, 1989, he made his debut in the friendly against Italy for his country. With his team Petrescu took part in the soccer world championships in 1994 and 1998 as well as in the soccer European championships in 1996 and 2000 .

In his last season Petrescu was as assistant coach of Walter Zenga for his club FC Naţional Bucharest operates. In the summer of 2003 he became the head coach of Sportul Studențesc , which had just been relegated to Divizia B. During the winter break he was sovereign at the top of the table with his club before first division team Rapid Bucharest signed him as the successor to Mircea Rednic . This commitment was not crowned with success: Rapid parted ways with Petrescu after just six games and replaced him with Viorel Hizo .

In the summer of 2004, Petrescu returned to Sportul, which had meanwhile been promoted to Divizia A. In the 2004/05 season he led the club safely to relegation. In the following season he defied the financial problems of the club and stood with his team in the secure midfield when the Polish first division club Wisła Krakow took him under contract. He finished the 2005/06 season with the reigning Polish champions in second behind Legia Warsaw . In September 2006, however, he had to take his hat back.

Then Petrescu returned to his home country, where League 1 promoted Unirea Urziceni took him on September 26, 2006 as the successor to the dismissed Costel Orac under contract. He continuously led the club to the top in Romania. After the 2007/08 season had ended with the first qualification for the UEFA Cup , he was able to win the Romanian championship for the first time with Unirea a year later . After reaching the round of 32 in the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League (as "relegated" from the Champions League ) and after being named Romania's Coach of the Year 2009 , Petrescu resigned on December 26, 2009. Four days later he was introduced as the new coach of the Russian second division club FK Kuban Krasnodar , with whom he was able to celebrate his return to the Premjer League at the end of the 2010 season .

On August 17, 2012, Petrescu took over the coaching position at FK Dynamo Moscow , but was dismissed in April 2014 following a 4-0 defeat at bottom Anzhi Makhachkala . From July to December 2014 he coached the Qatari club al-Arabi .

In June 2015 Petrescu took over the coaching position at ASA Târgu Mureş , but leaves the club after winning the Supercupa României against Steaua Bucharest with 1-0, due to financial problems of the club. This was his only game as coach of the team.

The very next day, he was appointed as a trainer at Jiangsu Suning . Already in the first season the team managed to win the CFA Cup under his leadership .

In June 2016, the Romanian took over the head coaching position at the Russian second division club FK Kuban Krasnodar , but was dismissed on October 4, 2016 due to continued unsuccessfulness. At the end of October 2016, the al-Nasr SC signed him in the United Arab Emirates. There he led his team to sixth place in the 2016/17 season .

In the summer of 2017, Petrescu left al-Nasr and accepted an offer from the Romanian first division club CFR Cluj . There he led his team to win the Romanian championship in the 2017/18 season.

On June 7, 2018, he was hired by the Chinese first division club Guizhou Hengfeng as head coach. He returned to CFR Cluj on March 22, 2019.

On March 25, 2008 Petrescu was awarded the Order of Merit "Meritul sportiv" III by the Romanian President Traian Băsescu for his services in the national team. Class excellent. He is an Honored Master of Sports.
