From the round of 16 onwards, all games - apart from the final, which was traditionally played in Bucharest - took place in a neutral place. Only one game was played at a time. If this was a draw after 90 minutes, an extension of 30 minutes followed. If after that there was still no decision, the decision was made on penalties .

After the referee Radu Petrescu had not recognized Gavril Balint's goal in the 90th minute due to an offside position , the Steaua players left the field in protest at the direction of Valentin Ceaușescu , whereupon the game was abandoned when the score was 1-1. First the trophy was handed over to Dinamo, later the Romanian Football Association scored the game 2-1 and declared Steaua the winner. In 1990 - after the Romanian Revolution - Steaua returned the trophy to Dinamo, but is still listed as the winner in official statistics to this day.
