The Lia Manoliu Stadium was the largest football stadium in Romania .

It was built in 1953 under the name National Stadium and opened on July 31, 1953 on the occasion of the World Festival of Youth and Students . Until 1990 it was named 23 August in reference to the Romanian national holiday , before it was renamed the National Stadium again. It was named after her in 1998 in honor of the late Olympic champion in the discus throw Lia Manoliu . The last renovations took place in 2002. It was the home stadium of the Romanian national football team and, according to official information, offered space for 60,120 people. As is typical for many, mostly very old football stadiums in Romania, it was completely uncovered. The colors of the seat shells were in those of the Romanian flag, i.e. red, blue and yellow. The playing field was surrounded by a running track.

The international match of the Romanian national team against Albania on November 21, 2007 as part of the qualification for the European Football Championship 2008 was the last event that took place in the Lia Manoliu Stadium. The old venue was demolished to make way for the Arena Națională , which was completed in August 2011, for 55,600 spectators.
