Adrian Bumbescu (born February 23, 1960 in Craiova ) is a former Romanian football player and current coach . The central defender played 316 games in the highest Romanian football league, Divizia A , and won seven championship titles. The highlight of his career was winning the 1986 European Cup .

Career as a player

Adrian Bumbescu started playing football at Universitatea Craiova and joined the first team squad at the age of 18. On August 24, 1978, he denied there his first game in the highest Romanian football league, the Divizia A . In Craiova Bumbescu was able to win the championship in 1980 , but not assert himself as a regular player. In the summer of 1980 he left the club and moved to league rivals Dinamo Bucharest , where he came on more stakes and in 1982 was able to win the double of the championship and cup . But he could not assert himself as a regular player for a longer period of time.

Bumbescu left Dinamo after two years and joined FC Olt Scorniceşti from the hometown of President Nicolae Ceauşescu . This enabled him to move to Steaua Bucharest two years later , although he had already played for arch rivals Dinamo. After he was already a regular at FC Olt, he was also able to assert himself at Steaua. With the club he won the Romanian championship five times in a row from 1985 to 1989. The highlight of his career was undoubtedly winning the European Cup in the Seville final against FC Barcelona . Another title win was missed three years later when the team was clearly defeated by AC Milan in the 1989 final .

After Bumbescu in the first round of the 1991/92 season was barely been used, his contract was not renewed and he moved to Callatis Mangalia to Divizia B . From 1992 he played for Steaua Mizil and ended his career there in 1995.

National team

Bumbescu played 15 games for the Romanian national soccer team and scored one goal. He made his debut on June 4, 1986 in a friendly against Norway . He and the team narrowly missed qualifying for the European Championship in 1988 . During the qualification for the World Cup in 1990 , which Romania finally managed, Bumbescu came on May 17, 1989 against Bulgaria for his last international match.

Career as a coach

After the end of his active career, Bumbescu returned as a youth coach to his former club Steaua Bucharest and was able to win three national championship titles with teams of different age groups within ten years. In the first half of the 2005/06 season, he accepted the offer, CS Concordia Chiajna in Divizia D train. In the winter break of the 2005/06 season Concordia Chiajna merged with relegation-threatened third division Argeşul Mihăileşti , who took up in the second half of the season under the name Concordia Chiajna - Mihăileşti and was only able to prevent relegation to the fourth division on the last match day. Before the start of the new season, the team from League IV was converted into a youth team, whose training Bumbescu took over. Concordia Chiajna's first team rose to Liga II in 2007 and Bumbescu was appointed assistant coach to Ion Dumitru . From autumn 2008 he assisted Dumitru Bolborea until his discharge on June 1, 2009. Bumbescu then took over the position of head coach at Concordia, but had to give way to Ion Dumitru on October 5, 2009 and was again his assistant. After Dumitrus contract was terminated on April 6, 2010, Bumbescu returned to the executive chair. On May 31, 2010 he had to give up his position for the second time in the current second division season and was replaced by his former player Laurențiu Diniță .

In the summer of 2010 he was responsible for the second team from Steaua Bucharest , which also plays in League II. From November 3, 2010, he moved into the second tier when a new head coach was appointed with Leo Strizu . Strizu was replaced on January 11, 2011 by Ion Dumitru , under whom Bumbescu had already worked in Chiajna.
